Herman’s Dream for Sydney City Farm

Herman and his granddaughter at Sydney park, St Peters

Not so long ago Liesje, our Sydney City Farm secretary, received a call from a

man by the name of Herman van der Made.

She was astounded to discover he had been lobbying for a city farm on the

Sydney Park site in St Peters nearly 40 years ago.

The similarities in his vision and what we in the Sydney

City Farm Group have been lobbying for are uncanny. This is his story…

Herman van der Made still remembers vividly the morning, almost 60 years

ago, when he woke up to the delicious smell of freshly baked bread filling the

air. As a hungry young man from the Nederlands backpacking around

Europe, almost nothing could be more tantalising. He quickly dressed and

following his nose, found himself in a beautiful Stadtbauernhof – a city farm in

the heart of South Germany.

That breakfast of warm bread, freshly churned curd from the farm’s cow and

coffee, set Herman on a quest that will finally come to fruition 60 years later

when the Sydney City Farm is created at Sydney Park in St Peters.

Europe, England and the United states were all well served with city farms

and Herman continued to seek out city farms – and that perfect breakfast -

wherever he travelled as a young man. Some years later when Herman, who

was now an architect, brought his family to settle in Sydney he was surprised

to find no farms in the city. Having experienced the pleasures of city farms he

decided to rectify the situation. In the early 1980s he directed his office to

prepare a proposal for the establishment of a city farm in what was, at that

time, a neglected wasteland in St Peters, to be sent to the City of Sydney

Council, Marrickville Council and other bodies including the RAS. Despite

there being little understanding of the concept of a city farm he managed to

interest a couple of enlightened men in the Department of Environmental

Planning and finally under the Greenspace Program in 1984, Fairfield City

Farm was born.

Herman, though, never let his dream of a farm on that wasteland in St Peters,

die. He would wander around the area, now Sydney Park, and think “Wouldn’t

it be nice…” In his imagination he saw himself arriving there to have freshly

baked bread and coffee amongst the lush green of a farm, surrounded by

orchards laden with all varieties of fruit.

Unfortunately, Marrickville Council, which at that stage held jurisdiction over

the area, continued to reject Herman’s proposal claiming there would be

inadequate parking. Not long after, Herman suffered his second heart attack

and his plans for the city farm were reluctantly relegated to the bottom drawer

where they have remained for over 20 years.

Recently Herman’s dreams were reawakened when he heard his vision for a

city farm at Sydney Park might soon become a reality. He contacted the

Sydney City Farm Group to offer his help. Liesje Clement and I, both

committee members for the group, met him there a few days ago. It was a

cold and blustery day but even the biting wind couldn’t dampen Herman’s

passionate enthusiasm for the future farm, his parting words to us being – “I

can die in peace if this farm happens…”

Callan Park extraordinary meeting and more…

Happy new 2011 city farmers!

We’re expecting an exciting year for the Sydney City Farm push, with the very real possibility of 3 city farms for Sydney.

To help with the cause, we have two issues that need your immediate input.

1.  Leichhardt Council is holding an extraordinary meeting on this Monday, 31st January at 7pm to discuss new information about the Callan Park Masterplan. The Council last considered this matter at its meeting to discuss the masterplan held on 7th December 2010. At that time they resolved to defer consideration pending the receipt of additional information.

In response, Leichhardt Council will be holding an extraordinary meeting in Leichhardt Town Hall on Monday 31 January 2011 commencing at 7.00pm.  The purpose of the meeting is to consider the report and additional information provided in relation to the Draft Callan Park Masterplan.  A copy of the officer’s report and associated documents can be viewed on Councils web page here.

2. City of Sydney Council has posted the City Farm Feasibility Study on their website. As well, the study is available for viewing at various council offices. The council is calling for comment on the findings of the study by the 25th February.

Please read the study and offer your input.

You can download it here and/or go to the City of Sydney Council website to comment

We encourage you to come to this meeting

Tuesday 7th Dec at 7 pm Leichhardt Council Chambers.

More information on the City of Sydney proposal:

The Committee voted in favour of the “articulated model” for a city farm. This would see horticultural and associated activities localised in Sydney Park at St Peters and the educational/cultural elements in a facility in the disused car park of the Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo.

The full report by Cloustons is available on the Council’s website:
http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/Council/MeetingsAndCommittees/2010/Committees/291110/environment.asp

Sydney City Farm president Andrew Jackson spoke at the Committee meeting in support of the proposal:

“We congratulate City of Sydney Council on supporting progress towards establishing a functional City Farm in the Sydney LGA. A city farm will provide opportunities for a broad cross section of people to change the way they live and to reduce their carbon emissions.”.

We want to thank all our Sydney City Farm supporters who attended the various meetings for both Callan Park and the City of Sydney workshops, as well as all our members who were there in spirit. An outcome of three city farms is beyond our expectations  and you helped us get there.

We look forward to seeing you at the City of Sydney Council Meeting at Sydney Town Hall next Monday 6th Dec, 5pm and the Leichhardt Council chambers the following evening, 7pm.

City Farm plans for Sydney intensify

Committee members and supporters attended two community consultation meetings on the 25th and 28th August run by two separate councils – The City of Sydney and Leichhardt Council. It seems finally Sydney is set to catch up with Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth, with consultation over City Farms progressing through both these council processes.

Coming from so far behind other Australian cities, it’s encouraging that we could see recommendations for up to 3 City Farm sites emerge out of the current consultation processes.

City of Sydney Council is unanimously in favour of establishing a City Farm in the Sydney Local Government Area.

The Council appointed Clouston & Associates to conduct a feasibility study to result in recommendations for the most suitable site and model for a City Farm in Sydney.

At the conclusion of the third community consultation on Wednesday August 25th, the front running site option seems to be Sydney Park, as the first stage in an ‘articulated model’ that would include a site behind the Powerhouse Museum almost concurrently. With the possibility of the Crescent Lands starting as a satellite site within 5 years, and adjascent land in the Harold Park redevelopment also possibly being included within ten years.

The high degree of enthusiasm and commitment from the Powerhouse Museum would make Sydney’s first city farm unique in it’s capacity to include highly sophisticated training, exhibitions and online resources to promote sustainable living.

Clouston’s is due to deliver it’s final report to Council in November – the presentation will be open to the public. For more details or to participate consult  http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/Residents/ParksAndLeisure/CommunityGardens/CityFarmFeasabilityStudy.asp

Leichhardt Council’s Callan Park master planning process run by McGregor Coxall, is showing an extremely high degree of support for proposals to create a City Farm on the site.

An online ‘collaborative map’ triggered enormous community engagement in favour of a City Farm on the site, with comments like this:

“.. a unique opportunity to build a city farm modelled on other great examples such as CERES in Melbourne. Research shows people value the environment by their exposure to the natural world during their childhood. It is essential to offer such spaces in metropolitan cities. Spaces where people learn about growing food, can connect with animals and build community. A city farm could also be an important vehicle for community education on sustainability and inner city food security which will become increasingly important in years to come. It too can provide a wonderful space for community gatherings and celebrations that acknowledge the traditional and current custodians of the land.”

McGregor Coxall will wrap up the consultation process by the end of the year.
