Soccer & Cricket to continue at Callan Park

Frank Sartor MP today issued the following release regarding the use of the Waterfront Drive oval over the next two years.

SOCCER AND CRICKET TO CONTINUE AT CALLAN PARK

The NSW Government is delivering on its commitment to ensure local sporting teams continue their association with Callan Park, Minister for Planning Frank Sartor said today.

The Balmain Junior Cricket Club and the Balmain and District Soccer Club have extended their current use agreements ensuring they can continue to hold games at Waterfront Drive oval for another two years, Mr Sartor said. The arrangement was instigated by Minister Sartor in response to representations from the Member for Balmain Verity Firth and the local community.

“We understand how important this oval is to the community,” Mr Sartor said. “We have always said we are committed to maintaining community access to the playing fields at Callan Park and these two agreements are an example of that commitment.

“There are about 400 players and officials associated with the cricket club, and 1600 players and officials associated with the soccer club.

“I am pleased that we can offer them certainty for the coming seasons.”

Member for Balmain Verity Firth said today’s announcement was good news for the many children and families who play sport at Callan Park.

“I’d like to acknowledge the work done by Douglas Moxon, President of the Balmain Junior Cricket Club and John Thomson and Brian Frankham of the Balmain and District Soccer Club,” Ms Firth said.

“Douglas, John and Brian have been tireless in letting the Government know about their need to have certainty so they can plan and organise the next season’s program.

“We are committed to maintaining public access to these playing fields and theseagreements were made in that spirit.”

Proposals for improving the playing fields at Callan Park will be included in the draft Master Plan for the site.

The draft Master Plan for Callan Park is expected to be completed by the end of the year and will then be placed on public exhibition.
